The AMV team has significant executive management, operating and board experience, as well as demonstrated expertise in sourcing, financing and exiting successful medical device companies. They have collectively co-founded 21 companies, raised over $250 million in private equity capital and have participated in private and public equity financings of well over $750 million while creating over $2 billion in shareholder value in their careers.
Thomas
D. Weldon
Chairman, Managing Director
As a co-founder of Accuitive Medical Ventures, Tom brings over 25 years
of operating experience, as well as critical fundraising skills in the
medical device industry. Tom co-founded the medical device incubator The
Innovation Factory (TIF) and serves as its chairman. He was also a
co-founder and chairman of Novoste Corporation, the intracoronary
radiation therapy company. He was chairman and CEO of Novoste from its
inception in 1992 and led the company through its initial public
offering in 1996.
Through his role at The Innovation Factory, he is co-founder of AcuFocus,
LipoSonix, Cerebral Vascular Applications (CVA), NeoVista, NeuroNetics,
Cellutions, OsteoLign and AqueSys. Tom currently sits on the boards of
LipoSonix, CVA, Celutions and Cardia Concepts. Tom holds 21 issued U.S.
patents on medical devices. Before joining Novoste, Tom held positions
with Arthur Young & Company and Key Pharmaceuticals in various business
and project management roles. Tom holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering
from Purdue University and an M.B.A. from Indiana University.
John A. Deedrick
Managing Director
John is a co-founder of AMV and has over 10 years venture investing
experience. Prior to joining AMV, John was a Venture Manager for Mayo
Medical Ventures. During his time at Mayo, John co-founded four
companies; Santarus (Nasdaq – STRS), Copharos, Teramedica and Torax
Medical. In addition, he managed investments in several emerging
medical companies including Exact Sciences (NASDAQ - EXAS), Circe
Biomedical (acquired), Ascension Orthopedics, Neotonus, CardiacAssist,
Image-Guided Neurologics (acquired), TomoTherapy (Nasdaq – TTPY) and
Volcano Therapeutics (Nasdaq – VOLC).
Prior to joining Mayo, John spent 12 years in numerous operating roles within Honeywell and
Alliant Techsystems. John holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Northwestern College
and an M.B.A. from St. Thomas University. John currently serves on the boards of MyoScience,
SoftScope, Cellutions and Cardiac Concepts.
Charles
E. Larsen
Managing Director
As a co-founder of Accuitive Medical Ventures, Charlie brings over 30
years of operating experience, as well as expansive technical
understanding and experience in the medical device industry. Charlie
was a co-founder of Novoste Corporation with Tom Weldon where his
efforts as a director and executive were critical to its ultimate
success. Charlie co-founded The Innovation Factory and serves as its
Vice Chairman. Through his role at The Innovation Factory, he is
co-founder of AcuFocus, LipoSonix, Cerebral Vascular Applications (CVA),
NeoVista, NeuroNetics, Cellutions, OsteoLign and AqueSys. He holds over
20 issued U.S. patents on medical devices. Before joining Novoste,
Charlie held positions with Cordis Corporation and Parke-Davis in senior
engineering and project management roles. Charlie received a B.S. in
Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Charlie currently serves on the boards of Inogen, OsteoLign, AqueSys and
CardioFocus.
Steven B. Waite
Managing Director
Steve co-founded Accuitive Medical Ventures, and brings 25 years of
significant operating experience in the healthcare industry. He
co-founded PrimeVision Health, Inc. and served as its CEO/President and
chairman from 1995 until 1999, when the company was merged into a public
entity with OptiCare, Inc. PrimeVision provided managed vision and
professional eye care products and services, attaining annual revenues
of $130 million in 1998. Prior to 1995, Steve co-founded HealthTech,
which owned and operated diagnostic cardiology labs and became one of
the leading providers of outpatient cardiology services in the US. He
also co-founded SafeWaste, a processor of medical waste. HealthTech and
SafeWaste were sold to public entities. Through his role as co-founder
and CEO at The Innovation Factory, he is co-founder of AcuFocus,
LipoSonix, Cerebral Vascular Applications (CVA), NeoVista, NeuroNetics,
Cellutions, OsteoLign and AqueSys. Mr. Waite holds a B.A. in Biology
and an M.B.A in Finance, both from Wake Forest University.
Steve currently serves on the boards of AcuFocus, NeoVista, Cellutions,
OsteoLign, WaveTec and AqueSys.
Gerard van Hamel Platerink
Managing Director
Prior to joining AMV at the time of its foundation, Gerard worked at Novoste Corporation,
the cardiovascular brachytherapy company, in business development and corporate
communications. Before joining Novoste, Gerard was in the Healthcare Group of Salomon
Brothers (now Citigroup) in London, where he focused on investments and transactions in the
medical device sector. He began his career with Kleinwort Benson, where he was an
investment banker and member of the bank's private equity and mezzanine finance group.
Gerard is a Dutch national, was born in Borneo in Southeast Asia, grew up in Africa and was
educated in the UK where he got his BS in Physics from St. Andrews University and an MBA
from Cambridge University.
Gerard is a co-founder of Halscion and currently has board
responsibilities for Halscion, Axogen, Neuronetics, NeoVista, WaveTec and AqueSys.
Gordon T. Wyatt
Chief Financial Officer
Gordon is CFO for AMV as well as The Innovation Factory. Prior to
joining The Innovation Factory, Mr. Wyatt was Senior Vice
President-Finance for WebMD Corporation; Senior Vice President and Chief
Financial Officer at several Dun & Bradstreet Corporation (D&B)
companies; and served in senior financial management positions at
General Electric Company, including GE’s Corporate Audit Staff. Mr.
Wyatt holds a B.S. in accounting and finance from Lehigh University.
Barak
Azmon, MD
Venture Partner
Dr Azmon is the co-founder and CEO of Notal Vision, an ophthalmic
diagnostic device company. He holds an M.D. degree from Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev, Israel, and formerly worked in the
Ophthalmology Department of the Tel Aviv Medical Center. Before
co-founding Notal Vision, Dr Azmon founded an educational company,
Eichot – Creative Learning. Dr. Azmon has been a coordinator of clinical
research projects for numerous companies and has been involved in the
development of a number of medical technologies. He was awarded the
Israeli Science Foundation grant for his research in visual cortex and
object recognition.
Dr Azmon currently serves on the boards of Acuity and NED, both located
in Israel.
M.
Albert Malvehy, MD
Senior Associate
Albert joined AMV Partners as a senior associate in 2007. Prior to
joining AMV Partners, Albert was a Board Certified Emergency Physician
practicing within the Duke University Health System. While maintaining a
clinical practice, he attended Duke University’s Fuqua School of
Business where he was a Bank of America and Healthcare Alumni
scholarship recipient. In 2006, Albert was selected as a Venture Fellow
with the Aurora Funds where he supported investment selection and
diligence in life science firms. Albert completed his residency at the
UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is board certified in
emergency medicine. As a resident, he was lead-author on an early paper
studying emergency department operations. Albert holds a BS and MD from
the University of Miami where he was a Medical Scholar.
Albert works closely with AMV portfolio companies Axogen and Cellutions.
